Are you a taxi operator in Austria? Or are you interested in this market? Then read on. In this blog post, we will provide you with all the information you need about the Austria taxi market.

There are currently 10,000 normal street taxis and 9,500 hire cars with drivers in Austria. This includes the drivers of Uber. In addition to the self-driving operators, almost 22,000 drivers are employed in the sector. Around half a billion euros are earned within this sector every year.

Change

As of 1 March 2021, a change will be made in Austria when it comes to the taxameter. This is because the taxameter obligation will expire and a minimum price will be implemented, what the exact minimum price is is determined by the provincial governors. The idea is that it will still be possible to take a taxi on the street and have the price determined by the taximeter, but it should also become more accessible to book a taxi in advance and agree on a fixed price.

Equal competition

The purpose of this change in the law is to ensure that there is equal competition between the normal ‘street taxis’ and the intermediary platforms like Uber. It is also possible to book a taxi in advance from taxi ranks and agree on a fixed price.
